Planning AS NEA task

Its now 2020 and I've had time to mull over ideas during Christmas and I've decided on a couple components of the adverts.
Firstly rather than centring around a single character I'm going to focus on a couple friends and their experiences in sixth form 3 weeks before their exams. I've also been considering different titles for the show and so far the working title is Journeys: 6th Form life, I may decide to change it later but it'll do for now.

I've also decided upon the overall style of lighting that I'm going to use during the adverts, I will mostly use realistic lighting in order to keep to the conventions of reality TV and drive home the realistic atmosphere I'm trying to create.

I settled on the opening and closing shots of my adverts, both will share the same opening shot of the camera moving towards the school to establish the location but they will have slightly different closing shots. For the first ad my closing shot will be an over the shoulder shot of a cast member entering an exam hall as the screen fades to white for me to display the program name and the logos for it and E4, the second ads closing shot will be a reverse of the opening shots which will change to a light purple slide which will come in from the right for me to display the program name and logo and the E4 logo.

I've also settled on how to present my actors in both adverts, in the first I will have short introductions for each actor to take up a portion of the ad and for the second I will use the audio from these introductions and play them over shots focusing on the respective actor.
Having finished a draft of my script and my statement of intent I will be gathering the last pieces of footage I need before I can start editing.

AS NEA Task First Ideas

For our AS NEA Task we were told to create two 30 second adverts for a Reality TV programme of our own creation.

My first idea was to create something along the lines of Educating Yorkshire as the location wouldn't be a problem, filming would be a relative ease and I would have a lot of things to potentially put into the trailers. However I decided to follow one persons journey through school rather than multiple people like my inspiration.

My current plan as of 18/12/2019 is to create 2 adverts following the school life of a couple sixth form students 3 weeks before the their exams, the first being primarily comedic and the second touching on more serious topics, I've also began to plan out the shots and dialogue in the adverts.

What a Surprise! Advert

we were instructed to use all of the skills we learnt so far to produce an advert using the following criteria:
  • use a form of colour correction
  • have an actor say "what a surprise"
  • create and use an original product
  • include a slogan and logo in the ad
  • use a variety of shot types
As this was the first production in was a part of where I was given a lot of freedom I decided to work with a group to finish the production.
One of the people In my group, joe, was adamant that he'd be behind the camera rather than act and due to his skill at editing we decided to use his edit as the final product as well. while his end product was superior to the rest of the groups due to his prior experience I think that I should've finished my edit off when I had the time rather than rely on my group.

John Lewis Advert

This next piece of work was for us to take a John Lewis advert and cut it down to under a minute in length while retaining the last couple of seconds containing the brand and contact information.
I attempted to only remove shots between cuts so that the overall flow of the advert wasn't interrupted and the location didn't change too drastically.
The only problem I had was with the audio, especially when the music kicks up, as it was harder to cut out shots without making it obvious with a poor audio or visual transition.
(for example the transition at 0:33)
However I believe I did my best with my current skillset and I managed to make my edits less noticeable upon first viewing.

Deodorant Montage

We created our deodorant montages in order to experiment with Adobe Premiere Pro and test our pre-existing editing skills and gain an idea of what skills we need to refine.

We were given several songs and deodorant adverts to use in the creation of our montage and told to utilise the editing tools at our disposal such as transitions and cuts.

I know I didn't do much to this montage however I think it will be a great point of reference to see how much I improve.

An Introduction to Me

Hello, my name is Jacob, I've created this blog in order to document my progress while studying As-Level Media studies. While I wont publish every little thing I do with Media Studies I will upload anything I create or any exceptional work progress made.

So that you have a better idea of what kind of person I am and what kind of work I may produce in the future I will give you a short summary of myself.

In short, I have a great love for media (most prominently games and film) and the production of these has interested me for a long while. The more I learn about them, the more my interest is piqued, the more I want to turn my appreciation into something others can enjoy. While I'm not the most active and I can get distracted, once I'm focused on something I wont stop until its perfect.
